Members,
The Don Valley Parkway will be closed this weekend to allow City of Toronto crews to perform annual maintenance. This work was previously scheduled for the weekend of April 13 to 16 but was postponed due to the weather.
A full closure is required for the safety of the public and the workers. With no major events taking place in the city this weekend, it offers the best option for a full closure for several months. The work is necessary to ensure that the Don Valley Parkway is in the best state-of-good repair to mitigate flooding from spring and summer rains and to ensure the road is ready for increased traffic levels for the upcoming tourist and event season.
The Don Valley Parkway will be closed in both directions between Highway 401/404 and the Gardiner Expressway from 11 p.m. on Friday, April 20 to 5 a.m. on Monday, April 23.
Specific activities that will be undertaken during this closure include:
• Resurfacing of the roadway, including some shoulder paving work • Flushing and inspecting culverts at four locations • Patching asphalt surfaces, including crack sealing • Pothole repairs • Non-structural inspection of 33 bridges and chipping if required • Cleaning of 38 bridge joints • Cleaning of 650 catch basins • Street sweeping and debris removal • Guiderail repair involving approximately 120 metres of damaged guiderail • Inspection of crash systems • Sign maintenance for the entire length of the roadway • Inspection and repair of 30 overhead signs • Maintenance of 16 closed-circuit television cameras • Inspection and maintenance of 27 equipment cabinets • Inspection and repair of streetlights.
Don Mills Road, Bayview Avenue, Victoria Park Avenue and Kingston Road are four alternative routes for motorists to use during the weekend closure. Whenever possible, people are encouraged to consider using public transit as an alternative to driving.
The TTC will close Line 1 from St. Clair West subway station to Union subway station for signal upgrades April 21 and 22. For alternate routes please click here.
The City will implement traffic signal timing changes to enhance traffic flow on alternate routes, coordinate other construction work to prevent major work from taking place along parallel routes, and provide real-time traffic information on the City’s overhead signs to mitigate traffic congestion resulting from the closure.
Motorists who would normally use the Don Valley Parkway should allow extra time to get to and from their destinations during the closure. Residents are reminded that the Don Valley Parkway was not closed for routine maintenance last fall because staff were able to achieve what they needed to do during the spring 2017 closure.
