Project Overview

The John Street Corridor Improvements project aims to enhance the public realm with a streetscape that reflects the street’s civic and cultural significance. The vision is to establish John Street as Toronto’s iconic cultural corridor. Initiated in 2009 through the Toronto Entertainment District BIA Master Plan, the project completed its Environmental Assessment between 2010 and 2012 and is now in its preliminary and detailed design phases.

Planned Improvements

The project includes widening sidewalks and boulevards, reducing the roadway to one lane in each direction between Wellington Street and Stephanie Street, and creating a gentler curb-to-roadway slope to support plaza-style uses during event closures. Additional improvements include new trees, upgraded paving materials, and enhanced roadway, pedestrian, event, and traffic lighting. Together, these changes will create a pedestrian-prioritizing, bike-friendly destination equipped to support major events and festivals.
