City of Toronto: York Street On Ramp to Gardiner Expressway

York On-Ramp Construction during the Gardiner Expressway Fall Maintenance Closure

As part of the upcoming Gardiner Expressway Fall Maintenance Closure, the York On-Ramp to westbound Gardiner Expressway will also be closed for construction activities, beginning at 11 p.m. on Friday, September 20

While the Gardiner Expressway will be fully closed from 11 p.m. on Friday, September 20, until 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 22, the York on-ramp will remain closed until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 23 to allow for completion of necessary construction work.

The York on-ramp work will include localized concrete patch repairs to the deck top and expansion joint repairs. The work involves removing asphalt and placing reinforcement, placing new concrete, and reinstating asphalt. The extended closure is necessary to allow the new concrete to fully cure before the ramp reopens.

Noisy Overnight Work – Friday, September 20

Please be advised that the noisiest work will occur overnight on Friday, September 20, during the removal of asphalt and concrete (chipping). Due to the limited time available for the completion of work, this work needs to occur overnight.

For the remainder of the weekend, the construction noise is expected to be similar to that of current daytime activity.

We apologies for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciate your patience as we work to complete these important infrastructure improvements.

City of Toronto Pre-Construction Notice: York St. On Ramp to Gardiner Expressway

Timing:

The project is set to start in June 2024 and aims to be completed by early 2025.

Traffic impacts:

Both lanes of the on-ramp will be kept open during most of the project.

One weekend and a few overnight closures will be necessary for safety and to ensure the quality of the work. These closures will be carefully scheduled to avoid conflicts with major city events and other traffic restrictions.

Background and overview of the work:

The York Street on-ramp, originally constructed in 1963, was last rehabilitated in 1990 and requires an immediate rehabilitation. The work will include comprehensive repairs to the bridge’s substructure and superstructure.

Construction notification:

Attached is a Pre-Construction Notice that provides an initial overview of the project. A more detailed Construction Notice will be distributed a few weeks before the start of the project. We will also provide advance notice for all night and weekend closures to ensure you are well-informed and can plan accordingly. Other westbound access ramps to the Gardiner Expressway, including those at Spadina Avenue and Jarvis Street, will remain open during this period.
