Small Business Property Tax Subclass

On January 2, a list of eligible small business subclass properties was made available through the City’s Open Data portal. Property owners have 90 days to submit a request for reconsideration.

Monday, April 1, 2024 is the deadline to submit a Request for Reconsideration for the 2024 taxation year, no late submissions can be accepted.

Single-Use & Takeaway Items Bylaw takes Effect

The City is moving forward with the Single-Use and Takeaway Items Bylaw which came into effect on March 1, 2024.

The bylaw includes:

  • An “ask-first/by-request” approach for:
    • Accessory food items, such as straws, napkins, stir sticks, utensils, beverage takeout trays and condiment packages.
    • Paper shopping bags except for certain types of paper shopping bags, such as those used to hold bakery items and prescription or medication bags.
  • Compatibility of paper bags with the City’s diversion programs (i.e., no metal grommets or plastic handles).
  • The acceptance of reusable shopping bags and reusable beverage cups provided by customers at retail business establishments.

The City is committed to helping retail business establishments comply with the bylaw through targeted education and outreach activities.

STACKT Market x Storefront Grant

The STACKTx Storefront Grant provides a small business in the GTA region with an opportunity to win a FREE 1-month lease at STACKT market to expand their business model, test out a retail storefront, engage with new and existing customers, and learn key insights that can be applied in its future growth. The grant location will be present within their flagship STACKT market at 28 Bathurst Street in downtown Toronto.

For STACKTx Storefront Grant, Toronto: Vol. 8, they are accepting applications from March 13 to April 1 via their website and are seeking to award an Asian-owned business based in the GTA for the month of May in commemoration of Asian Heritage Month.
