Born in Harlem, New York, Clark immigrated to Canada in 1968 and subsequently made Toronto her home. The questions of identity formation and their connection to our points of origin fuel her practice. In this deeply personal exhibition, she explores how history, memory, and identity—both individual and collective—have established the familial and artistic lineages that shape her work.

Organized by The Power Plant, June Clark: Witness brings together four significant bodies of work that stretch from the 1990s to the present, many of them seen here for the first time. These include her iconic installations Family Secrets, 1992, and Harlem Quilt, 1997, a series of photo-based works from 2004 titled 42 Thursdays in ParisPerseverance Suite (a new project the artist began in 2021), and Homage, a collection of sculptural assemblages that, in Clark’s words, “gave me permission to be the artist I am today.”

June Clark: Witness will be presented in tandem with another solo exhibition of the artist’s work at the Art Gallery of Ontario titled June Clark: Unrequited Love.

Gower, who has lived and worked internationally for many years, employs a range of media to investigate postwar material and intellectual histories, particularly as they connect to art and architecture.

Terence Gower: Embassy will feature over a decade-worth of work stemming from his investigation into the diplomatic architecture of the United States. Four multi-part installations form a larger study of American embassy buildings that have played important roles in recent international events in Baghdad, Havana, and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), as well as one unbuilt project for Ottawa. These expansive artistic constellations, including archival documents, sculptures, videos, and works on paper, are the outcome of the artist’s extensive research process.

Gower considers the exhibition itself as an embassy sent from the past, from a formative period in US history where much of the current geopolitical landscape was formed. Considering the urgencies and uncertainties of our current moment, Terence Gower: Embassy asks how we might work with history to better understand the present.

The star-studded features renowned soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, one of the select few singers to tackle the title character, as well as some of America’s finest operatic artists: tenor Matthew Polenzani as Giasone, soprano Janai Brugger as Glauce, and bass-baritone Eric Owens as Creonte.

The world premiere of Tyson’s Song by Peter N. Bailey from Pleiades Theatre stars Kyle Brown (Come From Away, Jesus Christ Superstar) as Tyson, and Jamar Adams-Thompson (Migraaaants, Three Ordinary Men) as Bryan. Tyson’s Song will be directed by Ash Knight, with set design by Anahita Dehbonehie, costume design by Des’ree Gray, sound design by Stephon Smith, and fight direction by Siobhan Richardson.

“As a storyteller, it's important to me that I tell the stories that I believe speak to the beauty and complexity of the lives of the Black men and women I've known throughout my life; those I've broken bread with; those I've played basketball with in the park; those I've fought; those I've loved; those I've worshipped or prayed with,” said playwright Peter N. Bailey. “To see our pain, and joy, and the truth of our experience as Black people in Canada reflected unapologetically back to us is, I believe, a part of my purpose as an artist.”

Jesus Christ Superstar is an iconic musical phenomenon with a world-wide fan base. In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, a new mesmerizing production comes to North America. Originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and helmed by the acclaimed director Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You, Into the Woods) and award-winning choreographer Drew McOnie (King Kong, Strictly Ballroom), this production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival garnering unprecedented reviews and accolades. Appealing to both theatre audiences and concert music fans, this production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring.

Featuring award-winning music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane and Superstar.

Charismatic leaders. These are the dictators, demagogues and false idols who, around the world at this very moment, are stoking division and igniting war in the name of nothing but self-gain. They’re also the unmistakable target of Wheel’s new album of the same name: a seven-song prog metal opus that strives for all things right in a world gone wrong.

Since forming in 2015, Wheel have swiftly grown from underdogs of Helsinki, Finland, to an international tour de force. The angular riffs, unforgettable melodies and adventurous scope of the trio’s 2019 debut, Moving Backwards, was instantly adored by fans of megastars from Tool to Coheed & Cambria. Then, 2021 follow-up Resident Human received rave reviews from publications across the planet, praising its sonic evolution and bravely dystopian themes.

Donizetti’s Don Pasquale returns to the COC for the first time in 30 years in a Technicolor-inspired production by Renaud Doucet and André Barbe. The French-Canadian creative team make their company debut with a lighthearted family feud: the aging Pasquale refuses to let his love-struck nephew Ernesto get married only to choose his nephew’s beloved Norina as his own bride-to-be. The comic bel canto opera features COC favourites soprano Simone Osborne and tenor Santiago Ballerini as the young lovers, and Georgian baritone Misha Kiria making his company debut in the title role.

One of the foremost violinists of his generation, Frank Peter Zimmermann performs Brahms’s spellbinding Violin Concerto in a virtuosic display of soaring cadenzas and lyrical, intimate dialogue with the Orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, performed side by side with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, takes on an alternatively menacing theme–surrendering to Fate. His tumultuous personal life, resulting breakdown, and composer’s block are all reflected in the movements, from sweet yearning, to despair, to the crashing inescapability of one’s destiny. Adding to the excitement are two World Premières commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from NexGen Composers Julia Mermelstein and Christina Volpini.
