It speaks to our personal relationship and dedication to the land and its inhabitants, and the enduring strength of Indigenous peoples. The first art piece, called All Beings Connected, was created by artist August Swinson. The figure in the center is rooted and is drawing strength from the earth beneath, symbolizing our personal relationship and dedication to the land and its inhabitants. You can find this piece in Union’s Great Hall. This second art piece, called The Original Treaties, was created by artist Luke Swinson. It represents the peaceful treaties Anishinaabe people made with the earth, sky and all living beings. Treaties allow us to work together, uphold our commitments and nourish relationships with creation. The hand holding an eagle feather symbolizes our connection to Creator and the enduring strength of our people. You can find this piece in Union’s Front Street Promenade Vitrine. About the Artists August Swinson is an artist and member of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, currently living in Kitchener, Ontario. August works in a variety of styles and uses a mix of hand drawn and computer generated illustrations. Influenced by the beauty of nature and the classic Canadian landscape, and memories of his childhood living on the Scugog Island reserve, his illustrations evoke a sense of fun, and something familiar that reminds us of a more innocent age but from a new perspective. Luke Swinson is a visual artist with Anishinaabe roots from Kitchener, Ontario. A member of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, Luke’s work reflects his desire to better understand and reclaim his Indigenous culture. He seeks to promote cultural education and preservation through his art projects.

Gower, who has lived and worked internationally for many years, employs a range of media to investigate postwar material and intellectual histories, particularly as they connect to art and architecture.

Terence Gower: Embassy will feature over a decade-worth of work stemming from his investigation into the diplomatic architecture of the United States. Four multi-part installations form a larger study of American embassy buildings that have played important roles in recent international events in Baghdad, Havana, and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), as well as one unbuilt project for Ottawa. These expansive artistic constellations, including archival documents, sculptures, videos, and works on paper, are the outcome of the artist’s extensive research process.

Gower considers the exhibition itself as an embassy sent from the past, from a formative period in US history where much of the current geopolitical landscape was formed. Considering the urgencies and uncertainties of our current moment, Terence Gower: Embassy asks how we might work with history to better understand the present.

Born in Harlem, New York, Clark immigrated to Canada in 1968 and subsequently made Toronto her home. The questions of identity formation and their connection to our points of origin fuel her practice. In this deeply personal exhibition, she explores how history, memory, and identity—both individual and collective—have established the familial and artistic lineages that shape her work.

Organized by The Power Plant, June Clark: Witness brings together four significant bodies of work that stretch from the 1990s to the present, many of them seen here for the first time. These include her iconic installations Family Secrets, 1992, and Harlem Quilt, 1997, a series of photo-based works from 2004 titled 42 Thursdays in ParisPerseverance Suite (a new project the artist began in 2021), and Homage, a collection of sculptural assemblages that, in Clark’s words, “gave me permission to be the artist I am today.”

June Clark: Witness will be presented in tandem with another solo exhibition of the artist’s work at the Art Gallery of Ontario titled June Clark: Unrequited Love.

During the pandemic, Wittenbols situated her own artworks in her garden or studio and painted them from observation. She views these “paintings of paintings” as a memento mori or vanitas. This summer, she will work at Harbourfront Centre and continue the LOOK PAINT REPEAT from her art and installations on display. Wittenbols will also experiment with new directions in her practice, leaving them on view and in progress, giving us a glimpse into her migrating studio.

For her multi-city International Passport Paintings, a project about freedom and identity, visitors are invited to participate in her artistic process. She will produce eight passport paintings per day, inspired by the days of analog photography. Wittenbols, as passport painting officer, creates a swift portrait at her migration desk with water-soluble oil paint on archival paper.

Visitors must register for an appointment. Appointments will be scheduled at 30-minute intervals. The actual portrait will take approximately 15 minutes or less. Appointments can also be made in person at our Information Desk.

Each passport portrait will accumulate in a large grid installation until the end of the exhibition. Individual portraits will then be mailed to each participant in a special sleeve.

Note: The exhibition will be open with regular hours on the Civic Holiday, Monday, August 6.

Neglected Nostalgia

Solo Exhibition by Elicser Elliott

Nostalgia is rooted in the inability of returning to a home once known. It is a feeling that combines the impossibility of desire with the mind tricks of memory. In Neglected Nostalgia, Elicser Elliott portrays people, objects and places from the memories belonging to him and other family members. These enchanted paintings bring together references from family folklore, childhood adventures, native flora, and vernacular architecture to reflect how we remember and re-imagine through affective relationships. Through Elicser's practiced storytelling, these seemingly disparate elements and moments constellate into lush and vibrant mise-en-scènes that captivate and enthrall viewers.

Curated by Nehal El-Hadi.
